What to Do If Your Stolen Car Is Recovered - And How to Keep It Safe After

Getting your car stolen is stressful enough - but getting it back? That’s a mix of relief and, well…more questions. Can I still drive it? Could the thief come back for it? Do I need to change the locks?

If that’s what’s running through your head right now, you’re not alone. Loads of people don’t know what to do next - but you’re in the right place. Here’s exactly what to do once your car’s been found, and how to make sure it stays safe.

Step 1: Don’t Jump In and Drive Just Yet

We get it - your car’s back, and your first instinct is probably to hop in and drive it home. But before you do that, give your insurance company a quick call.

They might want to:

  • Check the car over for hidden damage
  • Send someone to inspect it
  • Give you the green light to go ahead with repairs or security work

Skipping this step could mess with your insurance claim, so best to make the call first.

Step 2: Change the Locks or Rekey the Car

If your keys were taken (and potentially cloned), changing the locks is a must. You don’t want someone walking up and unlocking it again next week.

You’ve got a couple of options:

  • Rekey the existing locks - A locksmith resets your locks and ignition so a brand-new key is needed. Old ones won’t work anymore.
  • Replace the locks completely - Good if there’s any damage or if you just want extra peace of mind.

We do this kind of thing all the time, and in most cases, it can be sorted in under 48 hours.

Step 3: Deactivate Any Lost or Stolen Remote Keys

If your car uses a remote key or keyless entry fob, there’s a chance the thief can still unlock and start it - even if the physical key is long gone.

A good locksmith can:

  • Remove old keys from your car’s memory
  • Program fresh ones that only you can use
  • Check your system hasn’t been tampered with

It’s a quick job, but a super important one.

Step 4: Upgrade Your Car Security

Even if there’s no obvious damage, now’s the time to think about upping your car’s security - especially if it’s been targeted once.

Here’s a few things worth adding:

  • Steering wheel lock - old-school, but works
  • OBD port lock - stops thieves hacking your car through the diagnostics port
  • GPS tracker - helps locate the car if it’s ever taken again
  • Deadlocks or slamlocks for vans - extra security that can’t be opened with factory keys

We can fit most of this for you on-site, or at the very least point you in the right direction.

Step 5: Let Your Insurer Know What’s Been Done

Once the car’s sorted and secure again, make sure to:

  • Tell your insurance provider what repairs or upgrades you’ve had
  • Keep hold of any receipts
  • Ask if the added security could bring your premium down

(They don’t always tell you, but some insurers do offer discounts for added protection.)
