Lost Your Ford Puma Key? Replacement Options, Costs and What Happens Next

If you’ve lost your Ford Puma key, the first thing we’d want to know is exactly what has happened.

Is the key definitely gone? Have you still got a spare? Or is the key in your hand but the Puma has suddenly stopped recognising it?

It makes a difference, because with a modern Ford Puma, a “Key Not Detected” message doesn’t always mean you need a replacement key.

First, Is the Puma Actually Recognising the Key?

If you’ve still got the key but the car isn’t responding to it, we’d normally rule out the obvious things before replacing anything.

On keyless Ford Pumas, the fob uses a CR2032 battery. If that is running low, the car may struggle to detect the key as it normally would.

It can also be something as simple as interference. Ford warns that having the key very close to metal objects or electronic devices, including a mobile phone, can affect passive-key detection.

There’s also a backup position inside applicable Puma models. If the car isn’t detecting the key normally, you can remove the rubber mat beside the gear selector and place the key in the designated position underneath. This gives the car another way of recognising the fob.

So if someone rings us and says, “My Puma keeps saying Key Not Detected”, we wouldn’t immediately assume the whole key has failed.

But What If You’ve Actually Lost the Key?

If it’s genuinely missing, that’s where we come in.

You don’t need an existing key for us to make another one. If you’ve lost your only Ford Puma key, we can come out to the car, gain access if needed and make a replacement.

We’ll normally ask for the registration when you call. That lets us establish which key system your Puma has and what we’re dealing with before we arrive.

Depending on the age and specification, that could be a more conventional remote key or a passive key used with keyless entry and push-button starting.

Our replacement key prices currently start from £80.00 (+VAT) for a non-remote key, £120.00 (+VAT) for a remote key and £140.00 (+VAT) for a keyless key.

We’ll confirm the actual price for your Puma before we start the job.

And Yes, There Is a Real Key Inside the Fob

A lot of Puma owners don’t realise this until something goes wrong.

The passive fob contains a removable mechanical key blade. That gives you a way of manually unlocking the car if the electronic locking isn’t working.

It’s useful, but it doesn’t solve everything. If you’ve lost the complete fob, or the vehicle no longer has an authorised key, you still need a correctly programmed replacement before you can get back in and drive away.

That’s the part we deal with.

If the Key Was Stolen, Tell Us

There’s an important difference between dropping your Puma key somewhere and knowing, or suspecting, that somebody has taken it.

If you’ve simply lost it and there’s no realistic way of linking the key back to your car, you may only need a replacement.

If it was stolen, particularly along with something showing your address or vehicle details, we’d want to talk to you about the security side as well.

We can deal with the vehicle’s electronic key system so the missing key is no longer authorised. Where there is a genuine risk that somebody could come back with the physical key, rekeying the locks may also be worth considering.

What Do We Need From You?

Not much.

When you call, give us your Puma’s registration and tell us what has happened. If you still have the key, tell us what the car is doing. If you’ve lost it, let us know whether there is another working key and whether you think the missing one has simply been misplaced or could have been stolen.

You don’t need to know which key system your Puma has or what needs programming. That’s our job.

Once we know what you’re dealing with, we can explain what needs doing, give you the cost and arrange to get your Ford Puma key sorted.
