How Much Does a Replacement Car Key Cost in Norfolk?

If you’re in need of a replacement car key, there are various factors that can influence the price you pay. The first is the type of key - non-remote, remote, keyless, push-start, etc. The next is the type of vehicle you have and finally, whether you still have a working copy of your old key.

At Norwich Auto Locksmith, our prices start from:

  • Non-remote car keys: £80.00 (+VAT)
  • Remote car keys: £120.00 (+VAT)
  • Keyless or push-start keys: £140.00 (+VAT)

When you get in touch with us, we will be able to confirm a fixed price before starting any work, so you know there won’t be any unexpected costs further down the line.

What Affects the Cost of a Replacement Car Key?

You might think all keys are the same and it’s just a matter of cutting one to fit your lock. The reality is that, while two keys may look incredibly similar, the technology contained within them can actually be very different.

Let us explain in a little more detail.

The Type of Key

Non-remote keys are typically the least expensive keys to replace. However, it is worth bearing in mind that they may still contain a transponder chip, which will need to be programmed to the vehicle.

Remote keys also operate the central locking, while keyless and push-start keys can communicate with the car electronically while nearby. More advanced systems generally require more specialist equipment and programming.

The Make, Model and Age of the Vehicle

Manufacturers use different key designs, immobilisers and security systems, while the vehicle’s age can also affect how a new key is programmed.

Fortunately, we have experience of replacing keys for most major car and van manufacturers, including:

  • Audi
  • Ford
  • Honda
  • Land Rover
  • Nissan
  • Peugeot
  • Vauxhall
  • Volkswagen
  • Volvo

To find out if we can produce a replacement key for your vehicle, simply send us your registration number and we will be able to identify the correct key and provide an accurate quote.

Whether You Still Have a Working Key

Whilst it is not essential to have a spare working key, it is often cheaper to replace a key if you have a spare available.

In the event that all keys are lost, we will need to:

  • Gain access to the vehicle
  • Cut a new key from scratch
  • Program it directly to the vehicle

Most of this work can still be completed at the vehicle’s location, without needing to take it to a dealership.

What Happens If You Have Lost All Your Car Keys?

The first thing to say is, don’t panic! Losing your only key does not mean that the vehicle needs to be recovered to a garage.

Depending on the model, we can:

  • Open the vehicle without damaging it
  • Cut a new key without the original
  • Program it to the immobiliser
  • Test the locking and starting functions
  • Remove missing keys from the vehicle’s memory

If the key has been stolen rather than misplaced, we may also recommend rekeying the locks so the old key can no longer open the vehicle.

Is an Auto Locksmith Cheaper Than a Dealership?

In many cases, yes.

Dealerships may need to order a key, book the vehicle into a workshop and charge higher labour rates. You may also need to arrange recovery if the car cannot be driven.

We provide a mobile service across Norfolk and can usually cut, program and test the replacement key during one visit. This often makes the process quicker, simpler and less expensive.

Can You Buy a Replacement Key Online?

You can buy empty key shells and fobs online, but they are not always compatible with the vehicle.

The key must still be:

  • Correct for the model and year
  • Cut accurately
  • Compatible with the immobiliser
  • Programmed correctly
  • Tested with the vehicle

Some inexpensive keys contain unsuitable or previously locked components, which can leave you paying twice. We supply the correct key and make sure every required function works before we leave.

Can a Damaged Car Key Be Repaired?

Sometimes a broken casing, worn button or snapped blade can be repaired without replacing the full key.

However, a new key may be required if the transponder chip, circuit board or internal electronics have failed. We assess the existing key first and recommend the most practical option.

How Long Does Car Key Replacement Take?

Many replacement car keys can be completed within 30 to 60 minutes once we are with the vehicle.

Before finishing, we check that the new key:

  • Starts the engine
  • Locks and unlocks the doors
  • Works with the immobiliser
  • Operates the remote or keyless functions

More complex systems can take longer, but we will explain this when providing your quote.
